Censorship has been around as long as public performance, says Sova (English, Montclair State U.), and so she takes her sample of banned plays from the entire 2,500 years of theater. She considers them alphabetically by title, and includes production dates, characters, plot summary, censorship history, and lists of further reading. Appendices contain biographical sketches of the playwrights, categorizations of the profiled plays based on the reasons they were censored, and a list of a further 100 banned or censored plays.
